A Chinese-owned five-star hotel in Shanghai, pitching itself with an Eastern hospitality approach, is due to open later this month, according to a report in Travel Daily Media this week. Overlooking Huangxing Park in Yangpu district, the 188-room WH Ming Hotel Shanghai touts itself as China’s first “Yi Po Erh Shih” urban resort hotel, offering complimentary breakfast and dinner for a night’s stay. “Yi Po Erh Shih”, meaning “One night with Two Meals” in Chinese, was a popular Asian holiday concept during the 1990s, packaging room stays with a culinary experience.

Meanwhile, the Chinese-owned Tangla collection of luxury hotels is expected to launch another property on the popular coastal resort area of Sanya in Hainan later this year, with a fourth opening in Shenzhen to follow in July 2013. Founded in 2009, the Tangla chain, owned by the Hainan-based HNA group, started with properties in Beijing and Tianjin.

The chain has already won accolades for its hospitality standards. In July this year, its Tianjin property was awarded the Six-Star Diamond Award by the New York-based American Academy of Hospitality Sciences, making it the first Chinese hotel brand to win the award for excellence in luxury accommodation and service. This award puts the Tangla Tianjin on par with international hotel brands which have won the coveted award, including the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo and Hong Kong’s iconic Peninsula hotel. Tangla’s success lies in its unique “Eastern perspective,” Steven Song, chairman and president of HNA Hotels and Resorts told Jing Daily earlier this year.

The Tangla chain has plans to expand in the US and Europe as the group plans to cater to more Chinese travelers heading overseas, according to TTG Asia travel news website earlier this year.
